THE team at the South Essex Wildlife Hospital have had a “bittersweet” day as their oldest four common seals went off for release.

The charity, based in Orsett Road, Grays, said goodbye to the creatures who they have grown a “little attached” to over the last few months after vet Tom raised two of them from two days old and the others needing complex medical treatment on arrival.

In a Facebook post by the South Essex Wildlife Hospital, it said: “Yesterday was a bittersweet day for our team (and especially our vet, Tom) as our oldest four common seals went off for release.

“With Tom having raised two of these from just two days old, and with others needing complex medical treatment on arrival, we've grown a little attached to these beautiful creatures over the last few months!

“The wild is, and always will be, the very best place for these creatures to live, and Tom was given some rare time away from the hospital to make the 250+ mile trip to see them return home.

“Best of luck guys.”
