Chelmsford Prison has seen security improvements in recent years with prison food labelled as "very tasty", according to Stephen Metcalfe MP.
The South Basildon & East Thurrock MP visited the prison with Vicky Ford, MP for Chelmsford, and Mr Metcalfe noted enhanced measures such as new body scanners and preventive systems to stop drugs from being thrown over the prison wall are maintaining safety.
Mr Metcalfe also talked to the prison guards about safety and morale with the overall feedback being positive and the guards felt it was a "good place to work".
Mr Metcalfe said: "Prison has three purposes – punishment, deterrent and rehabilitation.
"On my visit to Chelmsford Prison, I met with the Governor Garry Newnes who is ensuring that the environment is safe and secure and that these three aims are being achieved."
"I also tried some prison food which I have to say was very tasty."
